Tuesday 8th August

Down for my first session at Dinton since my big hit in early July.     Due to work commitments and my holiday in France, this is the first visit I’ve made to the lake in about a month.     This is typical of my fishing these days-intensive periods of 2-3day sessions, followed by long periods away from the lake due to work.     This makes it difficult to catch up with any change in the carps’ movements while I’m away, but when I’m in the middle of a mini campaign I can often get a couple of swims baited up and fish these consistently for a few weeks.    The first couple of sessions back are usually hard though and this session is no different!     The area of the lake where I was catching in June and July is now virtually devoid of carp.   There are a few around the massive weed beds about 100 yards away but getting a hooked fish out of there is almost impossible.    Even Uncle Jim is despondent and has hardly had a fish from this area.

It seems that the fish have moved to the opposite end of the lake, to the deep water and massive weed beds around the Social swim and down to the Beach area.     They don’t usually get caught here much in the summer months, preferring to feed here in the autumn, but it looks as if they are there to stay.

Wednesday 9th August

Nothing to report so far and I’ve yet to see a single carp within about 80 yards of my baits.

Later in the day I spot a single carp near my baits.    It’s Sid, one of the fish I caught in July when it weighed nearly 51lb!   I don’t really want to catch her again, but there’s no chance of that as she looks very nervous.   I don’t see her again.

Thursday 10th August

The Social swim has come free so I decide to move down for the last night of the session.    There are dozens of fish in the swim, but it’s very, very weedy.     I get my baits positioned on decent spots next to thick weed, so I’m quite hopeful.     I’ve spodded out a decent bed of my mix on both rods, but I know the swim has had a lot of pressure so I’m not hugely confident.    However, it’s good that I’m fishing this area as the carp appear to have become resident around here, so I need to evaluate the carp’s behaviour and habits, and sort out a couple of swims where I can fish consistently and prebait a little without upsetting anyone.

Friday 11th August

Nothing has happened, and the fish appear cagey and unwilling to feed.    I pack up early and take a good look round the lake before I go, trying to establish some ideas for my next session in a few days time.
