First trip out on the commercials 2012-By Dan Vallis

My main aim for the winter period was to target big Perch on the canal which was going well and after landing some cracking 2lb plus perch I couldn’t complain but, with no 3lber in sight I decided to take my nieces Chloe & Ellie to Flaxland Fisheries in hope of catching some of there stunning carp.

As I’ve not been down Flax for some time and Steve has spent most of his life down there I had a quick chat with him to try and get up to speed on the going swims and tactics etc. It just so happened that Steve has been working on a ready to use feeder mix and was looking for another angler to give it ago and give some feedback on it.  Going on the success of his G-force mix which took Flaxlands apart in its first year I was more then confident in giving his mixture ago. With the bait and swim sorted I was all set for a days sport!

My Favourite Feeder!

On Steve’s advise I went for Peg 4 on the big lake fishing up into the channel. A lot of fish seem to hold in this area all year round, so as a starting point I went with both rods straight on the feeder. I was fishing for about an hour or so and other than liners I had nothing to report. Steve turned up just as I put the rods back out and he suggested to fish up the side of the channel and not so much in the middle as most fish will run deeper and tighter to the sides along the channel. It just seems that when the fish are moving though the middle part of the channel they seem to run more so in the mid layers.

After the reposition of the rods with plenty of liners I knew it would only be a matter of time before I was into my first Flaxland carp of 2012. Around ten minutes later and I was in action on what turned out to be consistent  day landing 2/3 fish an hour. Over the day we landed 17 carp, like I said I took my nieces with me and let both of the girls land and play the fish, only landing around five myself. Even Steve got in on the action and had a few.  For my first trip out, myself and the girls were well pleased and we landed some cracking carp between us. Here are some of our pictures.

I’m sure I’ll  be back to Flaxlands some time soon and would just like to thank Ruth & Gordon for looking after us!

Biggest of the trip!

I’ll keep you posted.

Silver Fish On Commercials-By Sam Nobbs

Silver Fish On Commercials

After waking up to a frost in the morning my confidence for a great day was reduced slightly, but who knew what could happen. This was a winter league match where only silver fish count, as it is on a commercial fishery and carp caught do not count. Many people do not realise that there is a massive head of silver fish in commercials, but they just are not fished for much. The fishery Walters Lake also known as Ridgeway was set to be the venue for this match, it is a commercial fishery which has 4 canal type lanes which all have a far bank to fish to at around a length of 16-19m. After  drawing out peg 14 I soon started walking down to the peg.

As this was a silver fish match I decided to set up a line at 13m which was 3/4 the way across to the island. The rig which had been set up at 13m was the same depth at top 2 plus half the number four section. These were to be my main swims. I also set up a pole rig at half the depth of my two swims, this would enable me to catch the fish if they were in the upper layers in the water. I then set up a rig at 3/4 of the depth this gives me the option if the fish are off the bottom. Then my final was a waggler rod set up at about 2/3 of the depth. Even though it has been cold recently I still decided to set up rigs which were off the bottom. I did this because of the weather forecasted, there was sun! This would warm up the upper layers of the water, and could bring the fish up in the water, and its no good fishing on the bottom if there aren’t many fish there.

I started up by cupping in 1 ball of ground bait and a few casters and maggots into the 13 meter line and also the same into the line at top 2 plus half the number 4 section.

I then put a single red maggot on the hook and shipped out to 13m. This brought no success. So I shipped back in and placed a worm head on to the hook. This brought me greater success and I hooked into my first fish, a small perch. I then did the same thing for the next hour putting one skimmer and 11 smaller fish in my net. This wasn’t great so I then when on my short line only putting a few more smaller fish into the net, not very productive. I then went back out to the 13m line and only netted a few small fish again.

So I got the waggler out put a red maggot on the hook and cast it onto my 13m line. As the float buried I found myself un-hooking a roach around 2oz, I carried on doing this for the rest of the match, but also casting around 7meters to my right feeding maggot over the top.

Around 1o’clock the swims started to die off so I just feed the extra maggot into the swim and this helped, bringing more fish into the swim. It shows just tweaking things a small amount can change your catch rate. I continued doing this until the end of the match catching 68 fish. I think the swim mainly died off because the sun had gone in and the fish might have returned to the bottom. Although it was slow at the end I enjoyed the days fishing.

This was enough to come second with 6lb 4oz. A brilliant day on the waggler rod, which is sometimes ignored by anglers. Waggler fishing is one of my first methods I learnt to fish, it is also one of my favorite methods as it can be very effective when other methods are not working.

The Bait

For my ground bait I used 30% Hinders Magic Method mix and 60% Sensas bream 3000, with 10% Little Gemz, chopped worms and hemp. This made up my ground bait mix.

Hook bait: 1 Pint of Casters, 1 Pint of Red and White Maggots and a tub of worms.

Rigs In Detail

My first rig, the 13m pole line this was an 0.5g hand made pole float on 0.13 main line through to 0.09 hooklength tied to a size 20 drennan silverfish maggott, this was on a doubled up number 3 elastic. My shallow pole rig was the same as the 13m rig but with a 0.1g garbolino DC6 pole float. My waggler set up was 4lb guru drag line through to an 0.09 hooklength with a size 18 drennan silverfish hook. The line used for my pole rigs and hooklengths is Preston Innovations reflo powerline.

Until next time

After deciding I was going to go fishing, I chose a lake near me that doesn’t get fished much. Not a lot happens up there but people reckon there are some hidden gems including a 20lb+ ghostie. After getting there, nothing was showing, so I stuck some long hook links on and a small stick to mask my hook. The longer hook link stops any debry on the bottom covering my hook. After getting 3 takes and all of them coimg off  I knew something was in there. I found loads of weed that looked like dread locks ha ha, so stuck some choddys on there. After getting the first take and it coming off I stepped the hook size up because of the major snags . After that I went on to have 3 carp from around 7-8lb they were all stunner’s. But one of the fish I lost at the start of the day felt like a lump.

The baits I was using  on my choddys was Snailz pop ups soaked in the concentrate, tipped off with fake corn which was soaked in Tiger slime, Pink slime, and Pineapple slime.

Cracking Winter CommonNot A double but still a stuner!

I’ll keep you all posted and hope to be back out soon

Big River Barbeling with Brian Skoyles

Filed under: Barbel Fishing — hinders @ 8:00 am

Big River Barbeling

By no stretch of the imagination would I call myself a barbel angler but by modifying some of my carp fishing tactics I’ve had some fabulous barbel fishing over the past year.

Barbel Fishing on the Trent

"Barbeling on the Trent"

Fishing the River Trent I’ve had double figure captures of fish to over ten pounds on several occasions and I’m sure that two tactical decisions have played a big part in keeping the fish coming.

Brian with a Trent Barbel

The Trent Barbel love Brian's Pellet & Hemp Mix

The first was a simple rig change to a long combi link consisting of 2ft of supple braid at the hook end and 4ft of fluorocarbon for the rest.

Brian's Pellet Mix

Waiting for the next barbel!!!

With a big powerful river like the Trent I reckoned that regular feeding was vital and initially I opted for using PVA Bags filled with mixed pellets (Hinders Pellet Combo and Nutrabaits Trigga Ice). I caught ok but it was difficult to maintain the momentum and I was getting through ridiculous quantities of PVA. Plus I wasn’t really happy with the bag approach as my hook-bait was always at the end of the line of free bait, so basically the fish had to eat or move over all the free bait before it got to mine. I tried attaching the bag to the lead but that was a pain as I had to keep drying the lead clip off, so it was time for a re-think.

I decided to switch to a feeder approach and acquired some large open ended feeders and modified them by fitting a larger swivel that would go easily in a standard lead clip.

Bait in the feeders would be a combination of pellets, hemp and maggots bound together with softened pellets.

A change of approach worked wonders

The final mix

When it came to the hemp, I’d never used pre prepared hemp before but browsing through the Hinders catalogue I decided to try the Hinders Salt and Chilli Pepper Hemp. The added attraction from the Salt and Chilli Pepper combination sounded worth a try in the powerful flow.

Sea Salt and Chilli Pepper Hemp

I can only say the results have been superb, if fact so far I’ve not had a blank when I’ve used the three part combination. After the past season I’m convinced that the three way mix of pellets, salt and chilli pepper hemp and maggots is a superb big river combination …. give it a try I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

One of many barbel Brian had using the mix

Another Big River Barbel for Brian

Ps I’ve also started using the salt and chilli pepper hemp in my carp fishing as well, and it’s rapidly becoming a must have when I’m stalking … highly recommended.
