PVA Bag Fishing

PVA Bag Fishing

Since I first got the fishing 'bug' 10 years ago a lot has changed (bait, rigs, hookbaits etc) but PVA Bags have remained pretty much the same - they're still dead simple and VERY effective!  It’s impossible to over-feed the fish if you simply offer a PVA bag with just enough food for one take at a time.  You can use a bag with confidence to ‘poach cast’ to a showing fish or good-looking feature without the risk of spooking a fish that a marker rod and plumbing brings.  PVA bags are perfect for the angler on the move because they’re so light to carry and they can be cast straight in to light weed and silt whilst still providing a perfect presentation to get a bite.

This was one of the bigger fish picked up using a bag in light weed during a 20+ fish session at Linear.

A selection of my favourite PVA Bags!!!

I have changed a couple of end tackle ‘bits’ from my original set up that have really helped increase my catch and landing rate.  Fish safety is the most important part of fishing to me and I’ve tried most leads on the market but the Fox Inline Lead is the safest I’ve found so far.  It provides enough tension to set the hook properly yet always releases to free up any lost fish.  The come in a choice of colours and you also get the added bonus that the insert doubles as your tail rubber that would usually be an extra cost!

The rig itself is straight forward as you can see from the pics. The key point is that a braided hooklength is a MUST.  With it you can create the most compact set-up of rig, hookbait, groundbait and lead without any tangles.  Some combi-hooklengths are stiff and can uncoil themselves.  This pushes the hookbait away from the bag. This exposed hooklength can then catch in weed or mean you may miss you chance altogether simply because the rig has been pushed too far away from your PVA bag and in most cases it’s one bag…one chance!!

When fished correctly the bag can be devastating.  Here are some more carp caught in day sessions from Tirley.  Over this short 12 hour period I had more than 30 takes!

I’ve been using PVA bags for 10 years and reckon they account for more than 70% of all my carp catches – so I’ll definitely be sticking with them!  They’re well worth a try if you haven’t used them before and I hope this little write up helps you catch more carp.
